Students know about issues at their schools better than anyone – especially when it comes to improving their health. But for some students, identifying problem areas is just the first step. On March 28, 2011, five metro area student groups kicked off new health-based initiatives they created.
FamilyCare Health Plans’ first-ever Healthy Students Healthy Oregon gift program is providing $100,000 in funding ($20,000 each) to help the selected student groups continue an existing project or launch a new one that promotes healthy lifestyles.
During spring and fall 2011, the student groups will implement their ideas, including building a new salad bar of healthy eating options, refurbishing an onsite garden to grow fresh vegetables, creating programs to track fitness and nutrition activities, promoting the benefits of drinking plenty of water, and hosting workshops about relevant health topics for peers.
