Extra Help for Prescription Drug Costs

We can help you!

If you are on Medicare, and you have limited income or resources, you may be eligible for extra help with your prescription costs.

You may qualify for a program offered through Social Security that will give you extra help to pay for your prescription drug premiums, deductibles, and co-payments.

To apply for extra help, follow these easy steps:


Step 1

Find out if you are eligible
You may be eligible if:

  • You are single and your annual income is less than $16,245
  • You are married, or a couple living in the same household, and your annual income is less than $21,855
  • You are at or below 150% of the federal poverty level

Step 2
Fill out and mail an application to the Social Security Administration.

Step 3
Receive confirmation from Social Security that you have been approved.
The Social Security Office will notify you in writing if you are approved to receive Low Income Subsidy or "extra help" for Prescription Drug Benefits. Once you receive approval from Social Security, you have 30 days to select a plan with Prescription Drug Coverage.

Your premium will generally be lower if you qualify for Medicare’s Extra Help program (also known as Low-Income Subsidy or LIS). To learn more about the Extra Help/LIS, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1‑800‑633‑4227). TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048. You can call these numbers for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

*This premium includes coverage for both medical benefits (such as doctors visits) and Medicare Part D prescription drugs. However, you will still need to pay any Medicare Part B premium you may owe.
